What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks are narrow streaks or lines that occur on the surface of the skin.
Doctors often refer to stretch marks as stria, striae. Both males and females can suffer from this condition. Stretch marks are the result of the skin suddenly stretching. The middle layer of skin (dermis) breaks in places, allowing the deeper layers to show through.

Stretch marks that develop during pregnancy are known as Striae Gravidarum.

What areas are affected?

The tummy, buttocks, breasts, upper arms and thighs are the areas of the body most often affected. Not everyone gets stretch marks – it depends on the skin type and people with higher collagen in the skin are less likely to get stretch marks. This is because collagen keeps the skin elastic and stretchy; allowing to expand more easily.

What is the difference between reddish pink and white stretch marks?

Stretch marks are often red or purple to start with, before gradually fading to a silvery-white colour. Stretch marks usually fade and become less noticeable over time, but this can often take years.

Is it possible to treat stretch marks?

Unfortunately, there is no miracle treatment or cream to completely get rid of the stretch marks.

If you have unsightly stretch marks, or if they affect a large area of your body, you may want to try one of the treatment options available. however, It is important to understand that stretch marks are not an easy skin condition to treat.
