Clients often wonder how long their injectables are going to last. This can be a testing question to answer as every individual is different and their longevity will differ.
However, there are a few things to consider when dealing with durability of wrinkle relaxers.
Factors affecting longevity
Factors that influence the longevity of injectable treatments include:
- Lifestyle factors
- Medications
- Metabolism
- Diet
- Exercise
Those patients with a very high metabolism or whom workout at the gym daily tend to metabolise injectables much faster than those who don’t. This is similar for those patients on low carbohydrate or low-calorie diets.
Anti-wrinkle injections
As for anti-wrinkle injections (neuromodulators) we usually recommend treatment every 3-4 months. Medaesthetics clinicians like to allow the muscles to regain most of their strength before re-treatment as this helps to lessen long term muscle atrophy. Some clients are able to stretch this time between treatments up to 6 months; however, this depends on the patients’ muscle strength, metabolism and desired aesthetic result.
When do anti-wrinkle injections kick in?
There can be some variation with how quickly anti-wrinkle injections kick in. For some clients, their muscles begin to relax within 48 hours, for others it can take up to 2 weeks. Our Senior Injector & Cosmetic Nurse Dani , advises patients that their wrinkle relaxers will gradually kick in over 2 weeks after treatment. At the 2 week mark our doctors and nurses like to see patients for a follow up appointment to make sure that they are happy with the results and to tweak any areas that may not be perfect, this is also a time for to review the dose so that we know it is accurate for future treatments.
The MAXIMUM effect of anti-wrinkle injections tends to be between 2-4 weeks post treatment, after this there is a gradual decline in effectiveness. For most clients, the results can be seen to have some effect for 3-4 months. Some clients return after just 2 months as they think their anti-wrinkle has completely worn off, however this is because the effect is just not as noticeable as it was in the first few weeks post treatment. This also depends on patient preference and whether they like to be completely ‘frozen’ or prefer a more ‘natural’ softer result.
Talk to our professionals to understand more
In summary, we can’t expect to be completely ‘frozen’ or without movement for 3-4 months as this is not how anti-wrinkle injections work. The toxin will gradually wear off over several weeks once it has hit its peak activity at 2-4 weeks. If the patient prefers to be ‘frozen’ they will need to repeat treatment more often than those after a softer result.
