Frequently Asked Questions About Dermal Fillers

What are dermal fillers made up of?

There are several types of dermal fillers available in the market today. Many dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps with hydration and volume. The most commonly used dermal fillers are made up of a carbohydrate gel.

Will I look fake or plastic after having dermal fillers?

At Medaestheics, our prime emphasis is on delivering natural-looking results with any cosmetic treatment we perform. Most of our patients want to look fresh and youthful and not fake or overdone.

A small percentage of our clients want a specific look with their filler treatment. We try our best to tailor-make each treatment to suit our client’s requirement.

Is the dermal fillers procedure painful?

As mentioned above, we use extra strong numbing cream and various other forms of anaesthesia to make the procedure as pain-free as possible. This includes the use of a vibrational anaesthesia device, local anaesthesia injections and inhalation anaesthesia gas (laughing gas).

We do not perform any dental blocks for cosmetic injectable treatments unless the patient specifically requests it. In our experience, injections for dental blocks often cause more pain and trauma than the actual treatment itself!

We are often told by patients that our injecting techniques are by far the gentlest and least painful.

What is the downtime associated with this treatment?

As mentioned earlier, there is generally minimal downtime, and most people can return to their normal activities straight after the treatment. Any downtime is due to swelling or bruising. Swelling tends to settle down within a few hours. Bruising can easily be camouflaged by makeup in most cases.

Note: Fillers in the lips tend to cause more swelling in patients over fifty and may last for up to seventy-two hours in some cases.

When will I see the treatment results?

Initial results with the carbohydrate fillers are visible immediately. The results tend to improve over time as the filler gel slowly plumps up by absorbing moisture from the surrounding area. Final results are seen after at least two weeks.

Some Non-Carbohydrate, Bio-stimulatory fillers tend to show full results several weeks after the procedure and may require three or more treatment sessions before the final results are visible.

What will happen if I stop getting dermal fillers in future? Will I look worse than now?

The answer is “No”. Dermal fillers are not permanent and when performed correctly, they do not have any effect on the future ageing process of your face once you stop having them.

Human skin is extremely elastic and resilient. You will not look worse than what you would naturally look if you have never had any fillers.

Which factors determine the longevity of dermal fillers?

The longevity of the Carbohydrate Gel dermal fillers depends upon: The brand of dermal filler used. It’s consistency (soft, medium or hard). The amount of product used and the treatment site. As mentioned earlier, most Carbohydrate Gel fillers last between six to twenty-four months. Fillers are metabolised faster in patients who:

Have a high resting metabolism
Are actively trying to lose weight
Are on a carbohydrate-restricted diet
Are undergoing emotional stress or physical illness
Are engaged in vigorous physical exercise/ fitness routines

Are there any alternative treatments available that deliver similar or better results than dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are the second most requested cosmetic treatment at Medaesthetics after wrinkle relaxers. They are quick and cost-effective compared to most other alternative treatments available today.

However, some patients do not like the idea of having fillers in their face or they may want to try something else. At Medaesthetics, we are one of the few clinics in Perth to offer the following alternative treatments to dermal fillers. These are:

Thread lifts
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
Micro and nano fat grafting
Fractional CO2 Laser
Thermage FLX Skin Tightening

What are the potential risks and complications of dermal fillers?

Carbohydrate Gel fillers have an excellent efficacy profile when injected by an experienced clinician. Some of the rare risks include:

Allergic reactions
Vascular trauma
Under or Over Correction

At Medaesthetics, we perform thousands of filler treatments each year and have the clinical expertise to manage potential complication associated with dermal fillers.

What can I do to prepare myself for this treatment?

Bruising and swelling are the most common side effect of any injection-based treatment. To minimise these side effects, patients are advised to avoid anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin (unless for medical reasons) ibuprofen, fish oil supplements, green tea, garlic, ginkgo and other herbal products for a week before the procedure. All these products are known to thin the blood and increase its clotting time, thus increasing the risk of bruising. Blood thinning medications are not advised for individuals who are seeking soft tissue or facial fillers. Please inform our staff if you are using any medication at the time of your initial consult. It is crucial to disclose your complete medical history, including medications and medical conditions, to minimise the risk of complications.

Alcohol also increases the risk of bruising and we recommend patients to completely avoid alcohol for at least 2 days before your procedure. We also encourage our patients to commence arnica tablets a few days before treatment. Arnica is a herbal supplement and is known to reduce the risk of bruising. It is available over the counter in most pharmacies and health supplement stores.

Important: If you have a history of cold sores, please notify us at the time of your initial consultation as soft tissue filler treatment can cause a flare-up. You may be required to take prophylactic anti-viral medications available over the counter in most pharmacies in Australia.
