What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal filler treatments are commonly used to restore volume to various areas of the face and hands, providing immediate and noticeable results. Dermal fillers can also be used to smooth wrinkles and enhance facial contours.

At Medaesthetics, we offer a wide-range of treatment options suitable for the unique needs of each individual.

Uses of Dermal Fillers

  • Volume Restoration: Restoring facial volume to cheeks, temples, and under the eyes (Tear troughs)
  • Facial contours: Smoothing out naso-labial folds, marionette lines, and other facial wrinkles.
  • Lip Augmentation: Enhancing the shape, size, and contour of the lips.
  • Facial Contouring: Defining jawline, chin, and nose reshaping.
  • Hand Rejuvenation: Restoring volume and reducing the appearance of veins and tendons in the hands.

It is important to note that dermal fillers are a medical procedure that should be performed by a licensed healthcare professional with experience in the administration of fillers. It is also important to discuss any potential risks and complications with your provider before undergoing the treatment.

Our Dermal Filler Treatment Process

Dermal fillers are a versatile and effective option for enhancing facial features and combating the signs of aging. The steps involved in our dermal filler treatment process include:

Consultation

A thorough consultation with a qualified practitioner to discuss goals, evaluate anatomy, and choose the appropriate filler. Expectations are also clearly established in these consultations, ensuring desired results are realistic based on your unique circumstances.

Preparation

Optimum pain management is our first priority before any treatment. Dermal filler treatment involves the application of extra strong numbing cream followed by local infiltration of anaesthesia to the treated area where applicable. The area is also thoroughly cleaned prior to treatment being undertaken.

The Dermal Filler Procedure

Dermal filler gel is carefully injected using ultra-fine needles or soft cannulas. At Medaesthetics, we prefer to use the cannula-technique as this minimises the risk of trauma to arteries or nerves. Lip fillers are done using the smallest possible size needle (31G).

Treatment times vary depending on the amount of dermal filler required and the area treated. Generally, it takes anywhere between five to thirty minutes. Treatment with dermal fillers sometimes may take more than one session to achieve the desired results.

Post-Treatment Care

We utilise advance injecting techniques that deliver maximum clinical results with minimum discomfort or trauma. Most of our patients are pleasantly surprised to see little to no swelling or bruising after their treatment, however, mild swelling, redness, or bruising is still common.

Specific aftercare instructions are provided to ensure optimal results. Patients are advised to refrain from heavy exercise, and consumption of alcohol soon after the treatment as this can increase the risk of swelling and bruising. It is possible to apply makeup straight after the treatment and to go about your normal activities.

The Benefits of Dermal Filler Treatments

Non-surgical: Quick procedure with minimal downtime.

Immediate Results: Visible improvements right after the treatment.

Customisable: Tailored to the individual’s needs and desired outcomes.

Temporary to Semi-Permanent: Various options available based on the desired duration of results.

Key Considerations

Suitability: Not all fillers are suitable for every individual or area of the face.

Side Effects: Potential side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, and, in rare cases, more serious complications like infection or vascular occlusion.

Results: Results vary based on the type of filler used and the individual’s response. Maintenance treatments are usually required to sustain the desired effect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dermal Fillers

What are dermal fillers made up of?

There are several types of dermal fillers available in the market today. Many dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps with hydration and volume. The most commonly used dermal fillers are made up of a carbohydrate gel.

Will I look fake or plastic after having dermal fillers?

At Medaestheics, our prime emphasis is on delivering natural-looking results with any cosmetic treatment we perform. Most of our patients want to look fresh and youthful and not fake or overdone.

A small percentage of our clients want a specific look with their filler treatment. We try our best to tailor-make each treatment to suit our client’s requirement.

Is the dermal fillers procedure painful?

As mentioned above, we use extra strong numbing cream and various other forms of anaesthesia to make the procedure as pain-free as possible. This includes the use of a vibrational anaesthesia device, local anaesthesia injections and inhalation anaesthesia gas (laughing gas).

We do not perform any dental blocks for cosmetic injectable treatments unless the patient specifically requests it. In our experience, injections for dental blocks often cause more pain and trauma than the actual treatment itself!

We are often told by patients that our injecting techniques are by far the gentlest and least painful.

What is the downtime associated with this treatment?

As mentioned earlier, there is generally minimal downtime, and most people can return to their normal activities straight after the treatment. Any downtime is due to swelling or bruising. Swelling tends to settle down within a few hours. Bruising can easily be camouflaged by makeup in most cases.

Note: Fillers in the lips tend to cause more swelling in patients over fifty and may last for up to seventy-two hours in some cases.

When will I see the treatment results?

Initial results with the carbohydrate fillers are visible immediately. The results tend to improve over time as the filler gel slowly plumps up by absorbing moisture from the surrounding area. Final results are seen after at least two weeks.

Some Non-Carbohydrate, Bio-stimulatory fillers tend to show full results several weeks after the procedure and may require three or more treatment sessions before the final results are visible.

What will happen if I stop getting dermal fillers in future? Will I look worse than now?

The answer is “No”. Dermal fillers are not permanent and when performed correctly, they do not have any effect on the future ageing process of your face once you stop having them.

Human skin is extremely elastic and resilient. You will not look worse than what you would naturally look if you have never had any fillers.

Which factors determine the longevity of dermal fillers?

The longevity of the Carbohydrate Gel dermal fillers depends upon: The brand of dermal filler used. It’s consistency (soft, medium or hard). The amount of product used and the treatment site. As mentioned earlier, most Carbohydrate Gel fillers last between six to twenty-four months. Fillers are metabolised faster in patients who:

Have a high resting metabolism
Are actively trying to lose weight
Are on a carbohydrate-restricted diet
Are undergoing emotional stress or physical illness
Are engaged in vigorous physical exercise/ fitness routines

Are there any alternative treatments available that deliver similar or better results than dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are the second most requested cosmetic treatment at Medaesthetics after wrinkle relaxers. They are quick and cost-effective compared to most other alternative treatments available today.

However, some patients do not like the idea of having fillers in their face or they may want to try something else. At Medaesthetics, we are one of the few clinics in Perth to offer the following alternative treatments to dermal fillers. These are:

Thread lifts
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
Micro and nano fat grafting
Fractional CO2 Laser
Thermage FLX Skin Tightening

What are the potential risks and complications of dermal fillers?

Carbohydrate Gel fillers have an excellent efficacy profile when injected by an experienced clinician. Some of the rare risks include:

Allergic reactions
Vascular trauma
Under or Over Correction

At Medaesthetics, we perform thousands of filler treatments each year and have the clinical expertise to manage potential complication associated with dermal fillers.

What can I do to prepare myself for this treatment?

Bruising and swelling are the most common side effect of any injection-based treatment. To minimise these side effects, patients are advised to avoid anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin (unless for medical reasons) ibuprofen, fish oil supplements, green tea, garlic, ginkgo and other herbal products for a week before the procedure. All these products are known to thin the blood and increase its clotting time, thus increasing the risk of bruising. Blood thinning medications are not advised for individuals who are seeking soft tissue or facial fillers. Please inform our staff if you are using any medication at the time of your initial consult. It is crucial to disclose your complete medical history, including medications and medical conditions, to minimise the risk of complications.

Alcohol also increases the risk of bruising and we recommend patients to completely avoid alcohol for at least 2 days before your procedure. We also encourage our patients to commence arnica tablets a few days before treatment. Arnica is a herbal supplement and is known to reduce the risk of bruising. It is available over the counter in most pharmacies and health supplement stores.

Important: If you have a history of cold sores, please notify us at the time of your initial consultation as soft tissue filler treatment can cause a flare-up. You may be required to take prophylactic anti-viral medications available over the counter in most pharmacies in Australia.
